OMS Scholarship: High Demand Leads to Bright Career Choice

Snowmagedon or Icedoom or however you characterized the recent weather disaster caused an exceptional amount of automobile carnage. Hopefully no OMS members’ cars were victims. Anyone whose vehicle does need repair is also having an inconvenient, head-on collision with a new fact of life of the auto-body-repair business, as noted in this article from the Oregonian. The number of collision-repair shops is decreasing while the need for their service is increasing. This problem has been growing even before the recent, slip-sliddin’ calamity exacerbated it. A critical reason for the decline in the number of body shops, which this article does not mention, is the lack of skilled people to do the increasingly-complex work. It should be a good feeling to OMS members that the Clackamas Community College scholarship we provide is helping people get training in this field and fill a serious need of the community. Instructor Russ Peterson at Clackamas CC gets way more requests for graduates from shop owners than the school can produce.

OMS Spirit of Sue and OMS Spark Plug Award Winners January 13, 2013
At year end, there are two Awards that can be given to OMS club members.

The Spirit of Sue Award is given to someone who exhibits dedication to the Mini marque through generous participation and involvement. The Spark Plug Award is given to someone for taking an enthusiastic role in the club activities or a particular event.

For 2012, the winner of the Spirit of Sue Award is Rhonda Hull, and the Spark Plug Award goes to Jeremy Thorpe.

Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance. July 15th, 2012
Bruce and Kerri exhibited two winning cars at Forest Grove this year. Both their restored-to-original woody and their recently finished MGB took First in their respective classes. Nice work you two.

Bruce and Mary’s little “Herschel” took First for “Best Foreign”. The ‘Hula-dog’ is truly a crowd-pleaser. Way to go Herschel!

Columbia River Concours d’Elegance and Car Show, August 5th, 2012
The Columbia River Concours d’Elegance and Car Show in Vancouver WA was a great showing of classic cars and period dress of car owners. What a wonderful venue! Linda and Steve introduced us to “The Queen” and “The Stig”, Dave and Anna brought their Alpha dressed as a Innocenti and Kerri took her 1961 Austin Countryman for a spin in the Winners Circle – Congratulations Kerri!

Steve and Linda were happy to report that in a fierce competition for Imported Cars, their Mr. Bridger took 2nd place to a Rolls Royce. Way to go Mr. Bridger!
